According to TheRegister.com, Digital Realty CTO Chris Sharp reveals that AI’s power demands are fundamentally breaking datacenter infrastructure, with GPU racks now consuming 120-140kW compared to just 6-7kW five years ago. Nvidia plans to launch 600kW racks packing 576 GPU dies by 2027, requiring completely new datacenter designs that current facilities can’t support. Digital Realty is collaborating with Nvidia on a Virginia research center to develop “AI factories” featuring Nvidia’s Vera Rubin GPUs debuting next year. They’re also working on Omniverse DSX software for simulating gigawatt-scale datacenters and grid-flexible power management with startup Emerald AI to handle AI’s spiky power consumption patterns that challenge grid operators.
The power density reality check
Here’s the thing that really stands out: we’ve gone from racking servers like stacking books to dealing with what are essentially mini supercomputers that need their own power plants. The numbers are staggering – 140kW today, 600kW by 2027. That’s not incremental growth, that’s a complete phase change in what we consider a “server rack.” And Sharp’s point about silicon innovation being “hampered by the permanence of concrete” is painfully accurate. You can design the most amazing chip in the world, but if the building can’t physically support it, what’s the point?
