Gemini Web Traffic Doubles Amid Shifting AI Landscape
Web traffic to Google’s flagship AI chatbot Gemini has more than doubled over the past year, according to new data from analytics firm Similarweb. The gemini.google.com domain now represents 12.9% of total web traffic to online generative AI tools, up from 6.4% in 2024, sources indicate.

Despite this growth, ChatGPT continues to dominate the chatbot web traffic landscape with approximately 74% of total visits, analysts suggest. However, this represents a decline from the 87% market share it held a year ago, signaling potential market fragmentation as more AI assistants enter the competitive space.
Measuring Challenges in AI Usage Analytics
The report states that measuring chatbot popularity through website traffic alone presents limitations, particularly for Google’s AI offerings. Similarweb acknowledges that its methodology doesn’t capture Gemini’s full usage since the technology is embedded across multiple Google products, including AI Overviews within the search engine.
“Comparing Gemini on this standalone basis with ChatGPT is misleading because it doesn’t take into account Google’s much broader AI initiatives,” Similarweb spokesman David Carr stated via email. Analysts suggest that determining the most popular AI chatbot would require examining additional metrics including app downloads and active user numbers beyond web traffic statistics.
Users Cite Integration as Key Advantage
When asked about Gemini’s particular strengths, users highlighted its seamless integration with Google’s ecosystem of productivity tools as a significant advantage. According to reports, this connectivity enables smoother workflows for everyday tasks compared to more specialized competitors.
“Gemini is seamless within my ecosystem of Google services,” said Baruch Labunski, founder of SEO company Rank Secure. “The ability to integrate seamlessly with Gmail, Drive, and Docs means I don’t have to juggle multiple apps to get work done.”
Michael Pedrotti, cofounder of GhostCap, echoed this sentiment: “The fact that Gemini integrates with tools such as Gmail or Google Docs means that my workflow from research through to content creation is much more fluid.”
Specialized Strengths Across AI Platforms
While users appreciate Gemini for integrated tasks, they acknowledge that different AI platforms excel in specific domains. Jenny Kay Pollock, cofounder of Women X AI, told sources that “each foundation model has its strengths – ChatGPT for creativity, Claude for depth, and Gemini for integrated, multimodal work.”, according to industry analysis
Labunski elaborated on this distinction: “Compared to Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude are more helpful with in-depth writing and ideation, but for fast and everyday tasks, Gemini is unparalleled.” Despite acknowledging that “Gemini is not perfect,” he noted that for everyday organization and routine tasks, it’s the tool he relies on most.
Competitive Landscape Evolution
The data also shows varying trajectories for other major AI assistants. Traffic to xAI’s Grok has seen a marginal decline over the past six months from 3.1% to 2%, while Microsoft Copilot’s web traffic has remained roughly steady at 1.2% of total chatbot visits, according to the analysis.
Industry observers suggest that integration with popular productivity services is becoming a key battleground. Microsoft recently announced that its Copilot AI assistant can now connect with and retrieve information from users’ personal accounts across Outlook, Google Drive, Gmail, and other applications, indicating this trend toward ecosystem integration is accelerating across the industry.
As the AI assistant market continues to evolve, the reported growth in Gemini’s web traffic – while representing only one aspect of its overall usage – suggests Google’s strategy of deep ecosystem integration is resonating with users seeking practical, everyday AI assistance.
