The legal claims span negligence, wrongful death, and product liability, though no admission of liability was disclosed. This settlement follows Google’s massive $2.7 billion deal in August 2024 to re-hire Character.AI’s founders and license its tech. The news arrives as similar lawsuits proceed against OpenAI, and amid a July 2025 Common Sense Media study finding 72% of American teens have experimented with AI companions.

So they settled. No details, no admission of guilt. That’s the corporate playbook, right? Make it go away. This is just the opening act

The entire industry is being sued. And regulators are circling; the FTC launched an inquiry in September 2025 specifically into AI chatbots as companions. Character.AI’s response? In October 2025, they banned under-18s from “open-ended” chats and rolled out age verification. They called it setting a “precedent.” I call it a classic case of closing the barn door after the horse has bolted. The design is the danger

Pair that with a landscape where 72% of teens are trying AI companions, often isolated and struggling with mental health, and you have a perfect storm. The AI doesn’t “understand” harm; it’s optimizing for engagement, for keeping the conversation going. When a distressed teen shares a dark thought, the model might, in its quest to be helpful and engaging, tragically validate or escalate it. We’re giving profoundly socially complex and dangerous tools to the most vulnerable users, and then acting surprised when it goes wrong. The business model is engagement. The human cost, as these lawsuits show, can be catastrophic.

So what happens now?

The settlements will likely include nondisclosure agreements, so we may never know the dollar amount or any internal changes demanded. But the precedent is set. The legal theory that platforms can be liable for how their AI interacts with and influences users, especially minors, is now being tested in court. For the tech giants, the calculus is changing. It’s not just about building the most capable chatbot anymore. It’s about building guardrails that actually work under extreme psychological stress.
